Raging Ravens of Raveleijn
A top-down action RPG set in Raveleijn, based on the Efteling story. Train with Halina, fight your way through the burning city and defeat the evil Olaf.

A theme park story, turned into a combat game.
Raging Ravens of Raveleijn is a top-down action RPG we made in one semester as a first-year project at Hanze. The assignment was to create a game that would bring more visitors to the Efteling, so we built one around its story of Raveleijn.
Most theme park games are about management. We wanted the opposite: a combat game that gives you the same thrill as the story does in the park. Because the game is based on Efteling’s story, it is not publicly released, but the trailer shows it in action.
How we made it
- 01
Story and dialogue
You play Thomas, a swordsman who is trained by Halina, the wife of the evil Olaf, to defeat her husband. Halina guides you through the game with branching conversations, built with a node-based dialogue system.
- 02
Characters, from concept to 3D
Every character started as a drawing. The art team made turnaround sheets, which we used to model the characters in Blender before bringing them into Unity. We also designed three starting paths with their own outfits, but cut them to focus on one hero.
- 03
The city and levels
We sketched the levels on paper first and then built Raveleijn as a medieval city in Unity. When you arrive, the city is already on fire, which sets the tone for the whole game.
- 04
Combat, enemies and UI
Combat combines a sword combo system with two fire abilities, PyroBlast and Dragon’s Breath. Enemies react to what you do, and the fights build up to a boss battle in front of the city hall.
- 05
Music
The game has its own original soundtrack, with separate tracks for the menu, the forest and the boss battle.

The result
The finished game takes you from training with Halina, through the burning streets of Raveleijn, to the boss battle in front of the city hall, with its own story, art and music. It was our first larger game in Unity as a team.
